Workplace Persona # 8 - Bonehead Bantering BIll

Bill jabbers to no one about his awesome weekend at the links.

Introduction:

You may know Bill.

Bill loves to talk.

Bill loves the first six minutes of every meeting, banter time.

BIll is funny sometimes.

Bill is annoying most of the time.

BIll was born to banter.

Now you know Bonehead Bantering BIll.

You know BBB.

Observations:

Observation # 1: BBB is an extravert in an introvert’s world. Software engineering is for dorks not jocks. We don’t like to talk and we don’t like to waste time in standup learning about your weekend. Bite your lip Bill.

Observation #2: BBB is all about the weekend. Bill’s weekend is spent playing golf, hanging out with friends, going cycling and watching sports. My weekend is none of your business. Move on BIll.

Observation #3: BBB does not learn from social cues. Bill does not pick up on slow, clearly annoyed one word responses. No reactions. No questions. No cmera on. No effort. This is not a problem for Bill. These actions increase your risk of being asked a question, “Have you all ever read the Red Rising series?”. Of course we have Bill, we’re sci-fi dorks. But no, for you, no I have not.

Observation #4: BBB is always looking at his own camera. Bill is looking at someone, himself on Zoom. Bill needs to see someone with a smile, and his wonky eyed looks to the screen always end up with a little smirk. There’s nothing to smirk at here Bill.

Observation #5: BBB relishes his role as culture king. Look here Bill, I don’t want a work culture. That’s the way I like it. Your optimism, and anecdotes about Settlers of Catan will not provoke me to join in on the fun. I’m all for team bonding, independently, and without interaction.
